We got our primary school place – hooray! But, the joy at receiving our first choice school was tinged with a sadness. It’s time to admit that my baby boy is growing up and will be off to school in September.
I have to confess to waiting up until midnight to find out his place. But after the initial sigh of relief, I did shed some tears. My first born will no longer be at home with me all day. My sidekick for the last 4 and a half years, gone!
I have quite often said that I couldn’t wait for him to go to school so he wasn’t around to cause trouble all day. But, most of the time he is a joy to have around. He is a fantastic big brother and the amount of help he gives me with his sisters is amazing.
I know it was inevitable it was going to happen but, I’m not sure I’m ready for the next stage in his life. I know he is more than ready for this new challenge and will probably enjoy every minute of it. His thirst for knowledge is incredible. There can’t be many children who ask to do their times tables before bed!
After saying I wouldn’t cry when he started school, only celebrate, I know the tears will fall as my biggest boy steps into the classroom for the first time. I’m welling up just thinking about it. I’m sure I won’t be the only emotional parent at the school gates on their first day in September.

This brought a lump to my throat just reading it as the memories are still there. But you will be just fine and so will he. It is a new stage which has its losses but benefits too. I wrote about the losses of motherhood in my blog a while back as they are so easily overlooked. I found it hard but I also really enjoyed one to one time with my youngest, which I had never had before.

We’re chompng at the bit to get our tot off to school. Just like we are when we have time away from him…then we spend the whole time missing him and can’t wait to get back.

Aaah I KNOW you won’t be the only emotional parent at the school gates! I’m sure there will be an awful lot of mums and dads who’ll be feeling exactly the same way in September! Definitely pros and cons. Back to work for me in August so, I’m going to lose those last few weeks with him but I know he’ll have twice as much fun at his grandparents than with me by then! Thanks for hosting x

aww I had this too. Corey got his first choice. But he has actually been at the school since January in a 4+ class so I’ve already had the first day excitement etc. Its so scary that they are old enough for school now. It makes the half terms and holidays etc all the more precious, I am so glad I work self employed so I know I am always around for him – its great flexibility!

We don’t have any school nurseries here so no first day excitement for us yet.
I still can’t believe my tiny little baby is big enough for school either. Where have 5 years gone!
